CLOSINGS AND DELAYED OPENINGS
DUE TO BAD WEATHER
1. We
follow Lancaster County Schools on cancellations, delays, and early dismissals
due to bad weather.
2. Since we observe what Lancaster
County Schools do, CCA does not put announcements on the radio or TV.
3. Should we have school a day that Lancaster County
does not and we need to alter the schedule due to inclement weather, the
teachers will call the home number listed on your emergency information form.

ATTENDANCE, ABSENCES,
TARDIES
As an accredited
school, Carolina Christian Academy is expected to meet or exceed state
education laws with regard to attendance as well as other areas. CCA’s
attendance requirements are formulated to comply with sate law.
Regular attendance is
essential to successful class work. Absences should be kept to a minimum.
Research shows that as few as two absences can lower a grade one letter in a
grading period.
1. South Carolina law (69-65-50) requires that students be in attendance
170 out of 180 days of school. All absences, excused and unexcused, over 10 are
unlawful.
2. In order to receive grades or credit
for a subject in grades 9 – 12, a student must attend 84 out of the 90 semester
classes. The national standard for a Carnegie Unit is 120 clock hours of
instruction time. All classes missed over six per semester will have to be made
up after school or on Saturdays. There will be a charge of $10 per class period
for makeup work. Make up classes will last 30 minutes.
3. Excusable reasons for school
absences are: (a) written doctor’s excuse (medical, dental, or optical); (b)
hospitalization or bereavement of a student’s relative; (c) note from parent
saying student was too sick to attend school; (d) sponsored events by student’s
home church such as missions trip, youth group trip, etc.; (e) court required
appearances; (f) school sponsored events; (g) emergency situations beyond the
parent’s or student’s control which the administrator excuses; (h) planned
family activities up to 5 days per year.
4. Written excuses for absences must be
turned in the day the student returns to school in order for absences to be
excused.
5. The maximum number of days that can
be excused based upon a parent’s note is five.
6. All missed work must be made up
before an absence will be marked excused.
7. The student has the number of days
or periods absent plus one to make up missed work, tests and quizzes. The
day student returns is counted as day or period one.
8. Students will be expected to be on
time to class, chapel, and all school functions. Students not seated at 8:00
(K-G6), 7:55 (G7-12) or who miss up to 1½ hours of the school day will be marked
tardy. Those who do not return to homeroom before school dismissal and stay
until called for will be marked tardy.
9. Those that miss between 1½ hours and
3 hours of the day will be marked absent ½ day.
10. Those absent more than three hours
will be marked absent for the entire day.
11. In grades 7 – 12, a student will be
marked absent for that period when ten or more minutes of any class is missed.
This is true also for chapel. Chapel attendance is kept by Bible teachers.
12. When a student has three tardies in
any grading period, it will be marked as an absence. The basis for excusing
tardies is the same as that for absences.
13. In grades 7 – 12, attendance will be
taken each period. Students not seated when the tardy bell first sounds will be
marked tardy. This is true for all periods, one through seven. After three
unexcused tardies per semester, (using restroom, getting water, stopped by
someone is not excused) each tardy will result in five demerits. This is also
true for study hall.
14. Students who present a valid drivers
license and proof of insurance may be permitted to drive to school. Drivers are
required to be parked by 7:45 and seated by 7:55. Drivers will lose driving
privilege for three weeks for each three driving tardies.
15. Tardies create more work for
teachers, interrupt the instructional time of other students, and harm the
education of the student who is tardy. It is not fair to the other students and
parents for a class to be continually interrupted by tardy students. To remedy
the chronic problem of tardies that CCA has experienced in the past, parents
will be charged $5.00 for each tardy in excess of fifteen. This is in addition
to the demerits that will be issued in grades 7 – 12.
16. Absences create more work for
teachers who have to schedule make-up quizzes and tests, etc. There will be a
charge of $20 for each unexcused absence in grades 1-8, or a charge of $4.00 for
each unexcused period in grades 9-12, whichever is lesser.
17. Parents should keep school calendar
in mind when planning vacation and remember that a few days may need to be added
at the end of the year to make up days missed due to weather. Students may not
take tests or exams early.
18. Students who are absent may not
participate in after school activities that day: ball games, concerts, plays,
banquets, etc.
19. Students violate the law when they
are absent without the parent’s or guardian’s knowledge and when they leave
without the school’s knowledge and/or without following the prescribed school
procedures. This law violation will result in suspensions first two offenses
and expulsion upon third violation. If a driver, student will lose driving
privilege for the rest of the year.
